Your thoughts??

Postby CitizenYank » Sun Jan 16, 2011 1:51 am

I was at a work the other day filling out some paperwork and by chance I met someone
who had just interviewed for one our security positions. While he was leaving I noticed he was
putting on a Tottenham scarf so I caught him in the lobby. The conversation went something
like this:

"Spurs fan, hunh. I follow the Premier League too."

"Don't you Yanks use the English Premier League."

"I follow Man City."

"Well, how can you be a Citizen when it is a town you've never even been too.
There just are just a shit Northern club."

I can't say these quote everything he said, but that's the jist of it.
Don't know what part of England this douchebag was from either.
But I immediately went back inside and made sure he will never get a
job for our company or any others we provide security for.

I've taken a lot of negative shit over the years from US fans but this
was the first time I caught shit of this type.

Do many PL fans feel this way about the foreign fan base?? I can understand
if you hate a rival club, but question a fan's loyalty because of their country of origin??

What kind of shit argument is that??

If you fill a stadium with 50k people there will always be some cunts. I suppose it's possible to say that there are many, but in reality it's a tiny minority. Most are very receptive.

Well done for giving that guy the flick, he was only going to be trouble. Imagine ignorant abusive xenophobic rants at a job interview to someone who's trying to be friendly: with guys like that, it's all downhill after that.

As much as we harp on about our 'Manchester' support and take the piss out of the rags for their foreign support if we want to move on to the next level and become a global force then we need fans like you who have been here before success to spread the word..I don't think in reality there are many like spurs fan..most supporters welcome anyone who pledges allegiance to their club for whatever reason..I see the likes of you..Doomy..NQDP and our many other non British blues as essential to our growth and appreciate the length you will go to follow our beloved blues

Keep up the good work ;-)

I strongly support & admire this abuse of power in both instances & urge you to keep it up in future. Excellent stuff.

Re fans from other countries; I don't see any kind of resentment amongst City fans at present. Anytime overseas supporters are sat in our area they always get a welcome from those nearby.

There is a worry that, as the popularity increases, City will attract millions of glory hunting knobs but although there will be an element of that, it may not be as bad as some people expect. Potential new foreign fans are tending to be judged by the standards set by those we have encountered at the swamp; clueless, ignorant, loud mouthed, embarrassing, glory hunting, twats. BUT, what people are forgetting is; they are Utd fans. Almost ALL Utd fans are the same, wherever they come from, so why should the overseas ones be any different? Those are the kind of people they attract. Doesn't mean we will get mostly arseholes following City.

anyone from overseas who chose to support city anytime but the last two years is clinically daft and therefore has the perfect dna to be a city fan. "The way that Manchester City is playing under Pearce remind me of Brazil 1970, I think I'll support them, as they're going to win everything'.

Going forwards, we're going to attract more fans and we need to, to boost income. For a Mancunian, it's not too bad, but for a 'foreigner', including those in London or St Austell, it'll be worse, as you'll be seen as a glory hunter.

So long as there's some glory to hunt, who cares.

I've loved City since Keegan was coach. And I hate to say this, I loved Man City because they weren't viewed as a big club. One of the years I followed the team, we scored like 14 goals at home. I think that is a Premier League record.
I love City because we are proud even when we have lost, that is why a LOT of Americans like City.
No one likes winning if it happens all the time!! But if you support your club anyway, that is all that matters.

My friends have always thought I am daft for supporting City?? Why pick THAT team they say.
I say 'choosing,' has nothing to do with it!!

We will probably pick up loads of new fans in the years to come. If they are "plastics" then those who've stuck with City through joy and despair (and despair, and despair) will end up looking down their noses at them - and so will fans of other clubs. On the other hand, If they absorb the "City culture", the "We're not really here" mentality, the self-depreciating, black humour and appreciate the pain as well as the joy, and the shear irrationality of supporting City then they are welcome.

I've been a fan since the 1994 season, and I've had to endure countless jokes about this team because in Italy we usually have a very peculiar habit: people usually tend to jump on the bandwagon of whoever wins something and cannot understand who doesn't do so (like me with my love for Udinese - the closest Serie A team from my homeplace and a team with a philosophy I adore - while almost the totality of people originally from my region tend to support one of the Big 3: Juventus, AC Milan and Inter).

Yet today I've to explain to pleople in my office that the scum is not the only team from Manchester and that they do not have to refer to them as "Manchester" without adding anything (something they've picked up from TV commentators down here).

So, a bloke comes to your place to get a job then basically has a go at someone who already works there. Not a wise move is it?

As for foreign support, everybody's welcome, we're getting ready for the biggest party on earth so don't forget the Blue Tinted specs. You'll get slagged, you'll get slated and you've got to fight to be a part of it, but guess what, it'll be all worth it in the end.

In regards to the bloke, you smoked him out as a clown. I wonder did you then find out if the interview process he went through also bring out his true nature? Interesting if it didn't.

As for the fans thing.. it is almost as complicated as football itself. I'm a 3rd generation City fan, i grew up as City and never questioned it in any real sense. As a kid i remember that i used to respect and even like some other teams, but it was always based on the fact that they played great football, not that they necessarily won anything.. it was all romantic as i both played and loved football. However it is easy dealing with 'second teams' as they are not under your skin.
One thing i have found though is that in talking or dealing with other fans is that there is a big difference from the ones that really watch and try to understand both their club and team and how they play and do things and others who dont really watch properly, cant give a critical analysis of performances, dont know what their club is up to and have their opinions formed by the press and the general sway of propaganda. They are the ones imo who talk shit and always revert to simplistic arguments and basically fuck off when things are not going right. They are usually indignant at being called glory hunters but yet in truth they are the ones that are being referred to when people talk about that.
So my take on new City supporters would be more of a thing where IF they understand football, the game and the dynamics of all the shit that goes on at least to the level of forming their own opinions, then they are probably going to be ok. If City consistently play fantastic football then we will get a lot of new supporters who jump onboard because of that.. they will be drawn to us out of respect and fascination for the way City play.
Beyond that to 'fans' that start supporting because we are winning things then it starts to get messy and imo we start to go down the road of the rags and the type of people who are interested because we are fashionable winners. they are more likely to be sore losers, arrogant, not understand football in general, not understand the ethos of the club and act like spoilt kids. The chances are that they would just continue to be ill informed pseudo opinionated annoying tossers.. so there is going to be a challenge for traditional fans in the future, some may well not like it and allow all the newcomers to sour their love for the club, but tbh if there was one set of supporters who would do a decent job of getting stuck into converting the newcomers to understand what they are getting involved in, then it is City fans.
This might sound a bit trite, but when i'm chatting to other fans these days i am aware in the back of my mind that i am representing in some way the idea of a City fan to them. As we have moved into the limelight this has taken on a different dimension.. most people are only getting the press propaganda and the previous goodwill to City has been seriously undermined. There is a need to counteract that and imo City fans are best placed to try and do that and nudge other people to question the press view and general perception and take a fresh look at City, take into account the great stuff the club is doing, the real commitment of the owners and perhaps above all the attitude of the fans, the humour, the lack of arrogance and not taking ourselves seriously.. from Swales to the Sheik, from the banana craze to the Poznan.

Thought it was only Brits who liked the plucky underdog, just because they're shit. If you start winning or become rich, everone in Britain hates you. Hence our recent press coverage. Scummy lottery winners are usually an exception, as that's seen as better than actually working for the wealth.

Whenever you hear rags on the radio here, they always say how long they've been a fan for, which is always from before taggart arrived. That's despite them being 13 and living in Kent. Unfortunately, I suspect we'll go the same way, all claiming to have been at the leyland daf game of whatever it was when 7 people turned up. Progress I suppose. I've kind of liked the friendliness of everyone when we were a joke, but I'm really starting to enjoy the hatred. Can't wait till we've got a trophy to go with the bank balance.

One point worth bearing in mind is that the overseas TV rights (equally split between clubs) is worth more money to Manchester City than season ticket sales (even with season tickets sold out).

The net result is the fact that the reason the best players play in the prem is down to foreign support. If someone isn't interested in having all those quality players, then why aren't they supporting their local side (there's almost always a league club closer).

English football fans should be thrilled to bits that supporters in other countries want to watch the Premier League: it makes the football better, the tickets cheaper, drives tourism to England and much of that money ends up being paid as tax. So football fans in Singapore mean that people (even those who don't watch football) in England pay (a little) less tax.
