How did Blackpool get such a round number in comparison to everyone else?

Chelsea and Liverpool paid out £9.2m and £9m respectively to agents in the year ending in September 2010, according to Premier League figures.

That was £3m higher than the next biggest club - Manchester City, who splashed out £5.9m on agents.

In all £67.1m passed hands between the 20 top-flight clubs and agents for the period October 2009 to September 2010 - £3.5m less than the previous 12 months.

Blackpool were bottom of the top-flight agent table having spent just £45,000.

However, the newly promoted club imposed strict spending limits when they were promoted to the top-flight at the end of last season.

Chelsea's spending on agents' fees in the 12 months was down slightly on the previous period but Liverpool increased their outlay by £2.4m.

Champions Chelsea bought just two players between October 2009 and September 2010 - Ramires and Yossi Benayoun - but the £9.2m figure reflects agent fees from previous periods where the payment had been structured over more than one year.

Manchester City more than halved their spending - from £12.8m to £5.9m - while neighbours Manchester United increased theirs by £800,000 to £2.3m.

A total of 742 transactions, some of which did not involve agents' fees, took place in the year to the end of September 2010 compared to 792 a year earlier.

It is the second year in which the Premier League has released the figures, having followed the example of the Football League which first published its spending reports in 2004.

Cheers for posting the text Chinners! I got this off the premier league site, but didn't want to make the post too long ;-)

The figure should be zero.

Clubs shouldn't pay agents, it's a conflict of interest. Players pay agents out of their own income or agents aren't paid at all.

This is £70m a year being spent on a job that shouldn't be happening because it's counterproductive. There's no value added for this expenditure, it's just powerbrokers leeching from clubs and fans. They're being paid to get in the way of deals, not facilitate them.
