Those already mentioned from the 60's/70's of course & Book & Pardoe were also very very good/strong. Bell became a great tackler in later years. DeJong has the determination but if he slid in like that on Summerbee, Mike would just jump over it then accidentally fall heavily & innoccently land with his foot or knee on Nige's face whilst never taking his eye off the ball.

Despite his size, he was quite a tough fucler. Started off as a winger but I remember him playing in central midfield on a few occasions for us and he was like a rabid dog. A rabid jack russell in fact

I think it goes unnoticed with barry alot because he stays on his feet but hes been taking fucking names this season and kompany started smashing people at the end of last season. As it stands though i'd say psycho, extra credit because he was only little.

I forgot about Pearce. Anyone get that end of season DVD when we won Division 1 and there was a little section on him doing some quality tackles and then squaring up to the person he's just tackled!

Lomas enjoyed a tackle as well I think.

Dunne didn't have much of a choice being a blunt instrument, given his size and overall coordination. Corluka could also
bring down the best Scum player flat on his face. I would also put Martin Petrov up there.

But the idea of tackling of someone hard as some sort of admirable trait in defenders I think is weak.
Paolo Maldini was by far the most efficient tackler I have ever seen but he made the slide tackle into an art form.

Baresi was the best defender I have ever seen but he was a different kind of player to Maldini and many games he didn't have to tackle because he was such an intelligent player....I don't understand the point you are making.

Aggression and intimidation is an effective tool for some fine defenders. Football is as much about athleticism as it is skill.

Tardelli and Passarella were masters of the art of tackling. Souness, Case, Bremner, Mackay, That Bastard from the swamp, Best, Wark, Giles, Butcher, Roberts, Stiles, Adams, Billy Bonds, Harris, Tommy Smith, Duncan Fergerson, Andy Gray. Kenny Burns, Mc Pharland, I can go on but all these I have seen in the flesh and they could tackle. Oh also add Joe Jordan.

Neil Pointon. He was nails. His moustache came off in a tackle once, and the man just played on.
