A surreal conversation earlier tonight

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

A surreal conversation earlier tonight

Postby Kladze » Mon Jun 21, 2010 11:31 pm

First, let me say I have nothing against women and football. The girl in question below is a City fan and actually fairly knowledgeable about the game. I see it more as a 'hormonal thing'.

I was at my brother's flat to watch the Spain v Honduras game when the phone rang and it emerged my bro had to go out for half an hour on a bit of business.
Anyway the game kicked off and about twenty minutes had gone when the following conversation took place - I've tried hard to make it 'word for word'.

Brother's girlfriend (BGF) : "Is Messi playing tonight or not? I've hardly heard his name mentioned".

Me : "No it's Spain"

BGF : "eh?"

Me: "It's Spain"

BGF : "Yeah so is he playing or is he suspended or something?"

Me : "No it's Spain and Messi is Argentinian"

BGF : "Who said anything about Messi?"

Me : "You did"

BGF : (laughing) "Did I really? sorry I meant Tevez"

....... short pause

BGF : "So?"

Me : So what?"

BGF : (starting to get irritated) "Why isn't he playing?"

Me : "Who?"

BGF : (a touch exasperated) "Tevez !!"

........ another pause

Me : "They must be resting him".

I left the room and stood on the balcony to have a calming smoke.

I can fully understand that Spain rested Tevez...he's playing for Argentina tomorrow...he'd be knackered.

my lady was crushed when I told her ronaldo is gay ... then I showed her that classic .gif of him staring at a rags flagpole in training and the pic of him with cut-off jean shorts. She doesn't doubt it anymore.

It's not just the fairer sex though. Zach Efron when questioned about the world cup said he couldn't wait for the USA game against Man U*d and Jackie Chan tipped Barcelona and Milan to do well in South Africa.
Balotelli......that's a brilliant finish.

I dont mind people jumpin on the bandwagon and gettin behind their nation, but it is cringe worthy when they try to make out they know what they're talkin about. I tend to just just agree and try and change convo.

Very funny mate.
To be fair to the fairer sex, some of them try to keep up with us but it doesn't always work.
My wife's got interested in football in the last couple of years basically because she's got a husband and 2 kids who are football crazy and is forced to watch a lot whether she likes it or not.
Having finally got a grasp on EPL football and she can now name players and clubs, in comes the World Cup which completely confused her. Seeing City and other EPL players playing for different countries was a bit hard for her to fathom.
Typical question in the first few days : How come Tevez's playing for Argentina, shouldn't he play for England since he plays for City !!!
After 2 weeks of WC, she now undertands the concept of Club and Country.
My project for the new season is to educate her on the difference between EPL and Europa League as she will be seeing City playing some strange clubs from Europe.
Its a long and ongoing process but its worth it as long as I can see my City play on T.V. whenever I like without her complaining all the time.
