CITY! --- 1981 Documentary

Postby Guy Debord » Wed Jun 16, 2010 11:10 am

I've just read the great Malcolm Allison's autobiography 'Colours of my Life' which is outstanding, and I found this old documentary which is great too.

I had a lump in my throat in part 5 when Big Mal ran on the pitch to receive the adulation of the Kippax. Another memory that is etched clearly in my mind. What a guy!

I can also remember him striding across the pitch when he brought Crystal Palace back to Maine Road in the cup - turning the jeers into an ovation as he did so. It took a supersize man to do such a thing and Big Mal was just the man for the job.

He'll be 83 this year. Pretty remarkable considering all the problems he's had with his lungs through exposure to Tuberculosis.

Remember watching that first time around. Bond added 3 experienced players, Bobby Mac, Tommy Hutch and Gerry Gow to Mal's youngsters and we shot up the league, were robbed in the League Cup semi by a dodgy ref called Alf Grey, and also made the Cup final.

Swailes still gives me the creeps.

That is absolutely super find! Well done!
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

I remember that from the 1st time & I aint watching the fucking nightmare over again. We're only just recovering from that systematic destruction of our club now (but are still sacking managers on a whim) . If I had a time machine I go back & prevent Swales from being born. Utter cunt.

Swales took the club from one of Englands best to laughing stock during his reign. That documentary was also shown in Norwegian television as we went towards the '81 cup final. It brings many memories. Malcolm Allison is still an enigma to me. But at his best that man was a genius. A certain Mr Mourinho learnt from him during his days in Portugal. City later asked big Mal about promising players in Portugal. Allison said Figo.
