Manchester City, one of the most storied and famous soccer clubs in the world, will play an exhibition game against the Portland Timbers

and then
Manchester City is one of the oldest soccer clubs in the prestigious English Premier League (EPL) and is ranked among the top clubs in England.

One curiosity, why do they call Premier League "EPL" in States. You pretty much never hear anyone in Europe calling it EPL.

Not a pisstake.... just a curious thing.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

didn't know that. Must be some sort of Premier League branding thing. Still, I don't think I've ever heard anyone saying something like "hey, did you watch EPL games on saturday".

Comes from having more than two sports called football perhaps.

AFL in Australia and NFL in America, if you say footie you are talking about something completely different.

If you say "the Premier League" in Brisbane you could be referring realistically to up to 6 different competitions.

But you would think that people had the idea from the context who you are talking about.

I've never said EPL nor do any of my friends use that term when talking about it, although whenever the games are on tv they use that term. I prefer "premier league" much more...

I think we do is because the US gets beset by soccer news the world over. South America, Europe, Latin America,
you have to remember, the Premier League is only one of the football leagues that gets coverage here. It
may just be a handy term to broadcasters.

The Timbers’ game against Manchester City has been added to the team’s season-ticket package. Fans without a season-ticket must purchase a season-ticket to attend the game.

Kinell have I read that right?

They seem to like their three letter abbreviations for some reason, so maybe it's a familiarity thing
