Harry sweats on Gomes

Postby Mark (Blue Army) » Sat May 01, 2010 7:39 pm

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is sweating on the fitness of goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes ahead of Wednesday's showdown with Manchester City.

Gomes sustained a groin problem late on during Tottenham's 1-0 win over Bolton on Saturday, which keeps them in fourth spot.

Spurs travel to Eastlands on Wednesday in a game that could decide who wins the race to finish fourth and Gomes is a doubt for the vital clash.

Fellow Champions League chasers City brought in Sunderland reserve goalkeeper Marton Fulop this week after Shay Given dislocated a shoulder, but Redknapp will not apply for an emergency loan if Gomes is forced to miss the rest of the campaign.

Should Gomes not be fit for the remainder of the campaign, Redknapp will be forced to field England Under 21 goalkeeper Ben Alnwick or veteran Jimmy Walker, neither of whom have played for Spurs this year.

Redknapp admits losing Gomes would be a blow, but he insists that he will not enter the loan market should the 29-year-old be unable to recover for Spurs' remaining two games.

"Gomes' groin is sore. He'll have a scan and see what the damage is. Hopefully he'll be okay," said Redknapp.

"Gomes is looking a fantastic goalkeeper. He has everything and looks like the goalkeeper everyone was talking about before he came here (from PSV Eindhoven).

"If he isn't fit, Ben would play and Jimmy would be on the bench."

Redknapp insists he will not go to City looking for a draw knowing a last-day win at Burnley would secure fourth spot and Champions League football at White Hart Lane next season.

"We're right there. We have two big games to come," added Redknapp.

"It's a massive game and we would have taken this at the start of the season.

"City are tough opposition. City's front two are a threat to anyone but we have good strikers too.

"I wouldn't want to go there and be negative.

"We have attacking midfielders and wingers so we won't change too much.

"It would be nice if we got there but I'm not going to get too excited."

It would be a big boost for us if he's not fit for Wednesday.

He's been a key player for them this season.
It would only be fair if the goalkeeping situation was 'evened up', by him not being available for Wednesday!

Rednapp looked drained today in his interview and when asked about City's 3-0, fell into the boards. Is he feeling the pressure?

One of the reporters asked Redknapp if Gomez will be fit and he said "I think he'll be alright, but if not we can bring someone in on loan because we only have 2 or 3 available keepers left" and him and the reporter started pissing themselves laughing.

Cunts.

What happened to Carlo Cudicini? I thought he was on their books as back-up keeper.

He had a near fatal motorbike accident in November. I very much doubt he's fit.
