Jonathan Woodgate fears World Cup Omission

He is barking if he even thinks he was remotely in with a shout for the squad IMO (see below)

But that brings me to my question....as things stand (and you can factor in who "should" be fit to make the tournament) to whom would you be giving the 23 plane tickets for South Africa if you were Don Fabio

Tottenham's Jonathan Woodgate believes he has no chance of being selected for England's 2010 World Cup squad.

The centre-back, who has been hampered by a groin injury, has featured in only three Premier League games this term.

He has won two caps under England boss Fabio Capello, the last of which came as a substitute in August 2008.

The 29-year-old said: "I don't train all the time and Capello likes people who train every day. I haven't given up but we'll see what happens."

Woodgate's career has been blighted by injuries and he missed the start of this campaign after twice undergoing surgery on the groin problem.

The former Real Madrid, Middlesbrough and Newcastle defender returned to the Tottenham backline for the home defeat by Stoke in October and has featured in the club's last two league games against Sunderland and Wigan.

However, he remained pessimistic about his chances of making the trip to South Africa next summer.

National team captain John Terry and Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand, who is himself struggling with injury, seem to be Capello's first-choice pairing in the centre of defence.

Plus, Manchester United's Wes Brown, West Ham's Matthew Upson, Bolton's Gary Cahill and Manchester City's Joleon Lescott have featured in Capello's most recent squads and are perceived to be fighting for the two remaining central defensive berths.

Woodgate is more optimistic over Jermain Defoe's chances of making a major impact in South Africa, comparing the Tottenham striker to Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

Defoe scored five goals for Spurs in Sunday's 9-1 drubbing of Wigan and Woodgate stated: "JD can do anything he wants to do.

"Fabio Capello seems to have a lot of faith in him and he's been outstanding. He can make a massive impact at the World Cup, without a doubt.

"Put Jermain Defoe up playing for Barcelona and I'm sure he'd be well known as well.

"Full credit to him, he does it in training ever day. The Golden Boot? He's got every chance, hasn't he?"

Defenders
Glen Johnson
John Terry
Rio Ferdinand -- i don't think he'll make the list due to his injury woes. This could be one shocker as a replacement.
Ashley Cole
Wes Brown
Matthew Upson
Joleon Lescott
Wayne Bridge

Midfielders
Frank Lampard
Steven Gerrard
Gareth Barry
Theo Walcott
[strike]Shaun Wright Phillips[/strike] Aaron Lennon. SWP is, on form, not ready for the City starting side let alone England.
Joe Cole
James Milner
David Beckham -- can't see why this cunt should be getting one more runout tbh. SWPs only shot at getting into the WC is if Beckham has some asthmatic reaction to his COTY eau de parfum. Or if Lennon breaks his dick.

Strikers
Wayne Rooney
Jermaine Defoe
[strike]Emile Heskey[/strike] Darren Bent. Hesky is nice, but you need someone to actually fuclin score a goal from the forward line.
Peter Crouch

looks pretty ok other than those obv fuck ups. Thank fuck Don Ant isn't running the squad. You'd have lost a playoff to Croatia or summat.

cheers

I'd be seriously surprised to see SWP make the cut.

Bridge

Lennon
Milner
Barry
Gerrard
Lampard
Huddlestone- amazing player, so underrated
Joe Cole
Ashley Young
SWP

Rooney

I think we should just go all-out and fill the squad up with anyone called Cole, just to confuse the opposition. We might lose a few games though (like all of them)

Hmm makes me wonder why nobody thought of Nedhum I think he should be brought up at least as a sub to the main squad. Hes better than the backup they got even at such a young age.

Not a lot else to add.

Heskey will go and will start. Hargreaves will go if fit. SWP will miss out to Lennon and Walcott.

Can anyone tell me what the big deal is with Hargreaves. I don't watch German football or the scum, so I've not seen that much of him, but when I have seen him play he looks really ordinary.

Not perhaps what I'd take but rather what I think Capello will take

GK
James
Green
Foster

Def
Johnson
Brown
Ferdinand
Terry
Upson
A Cole
Lescott

Midf
Walcott
Beckham
Lampard
Gerrard
Barry
J Cole
Milner
Lennon

Attack
Rooney
Heskey
Defoe
Crouch
C Cole

SWP has 3-4 of him in the queue with Milner getting the nod as he covers both wings. Bridge doesn't go as he isn't good enough, end of.

If fit, Walcott is an automatic selection. Lescott sneaks as covers left-back as well as centre-half. Hargreaves is a sicknotfe and cant be relied upon as a passenger, whilst if fit Agbonlahor and Carrick are on standby.

Good call that re Jags....I would probably agree with him in front of Upson if he can get fit and find form

Interesting that you call Huddlestone, I really like him as a player but I haven't met too many who concur if I'm honest.

huddlestone has it all in his locker, he just doesn't seem to hit form and consistency. If he decides to get his act together, he could have a fantastic future.

Agree 100% with Doomy here apart from the fact that how the fuck does Wes Brown manage to get an England call-up time and again ffs? If he played for Burnley or Pompey he wouldn't even get considered, it just shows how shit our our choice of defenders is doesn't it.

Yeah, I reckon Jags is the better of the two. If he could get back playing by Christmas/New Year he has every chance of making it. One of the best defenders- English or foreign- in the league last season I think.

As for Huddlestone, he first caught my eye when we played Spurs in Pearce's last season, he scored a thunderbolt (as he does quite often) and dominated the game, thought he was the best player on the pitch so I kept tabs on him and he just seems to have the lot- a wonderful passing range, cracking shot, strength, vision, pretty good tackler. He's been doing well this season too. Don't think Fabio will pick him though, he'll go with 'I only pass it sideways and angle my body in a fashion which makes it look like I'm doing something clever' Carrick.

Good a player as Jagielka was last season, he's made one international friendly appearance and gave a goal away in that.

He's coming off a cruciate ligament injury and as yet there is no sign of him making a first team return. Given it takes up to 6 months of good fitness work, and featuring in games themselves at the top level to return to your previous full fitness after such a horrific injury I'd rate his chances of being in the squad as between slim and none.

Not enough time for him, and 4-5 others in the queue ahead of him as well in a position England (in Capello's eyes) have plenty of options.
