I wish that was us tonight

Postby Rag_hater » Thu Oct 22, 2009 8:22 pm

I know some people see this Europa league as a waste of time but I'm a bit jealous of Fulham tonight.
For me it would have been nice to see us playing Roma tonight.
Nevermind there's always next year.

Deferred gratification...It was a nice interlude for the few of us who turned up last season to watch the UeFA Cup. It is for the 2nd tier of European clubs and CL failures...we are neither.
Next season we will be in the big league...and we will be one of the big boys.

I assume that means the champions league is for the 1st tier of European clubs.

Being we aren't in that I can only assume we aren't 1st, according to you we aren't 2nd...hmmm.

You're right Slim. The CL is the 1st tier and though we're not in it this season, I do think we are good enough to compete if we were.
Qualification for this season's competition was defined by last season's form, we have improved dramatically since then.

As you were so fond of saying, shouldn't we make that call on the complete season and not rush to snap judgments?

Roma are a good side, it would have been nice to play them.

We are going to do much better domesticaly this season because we don't have to fly away hours east. If we do manage to qualify for the champions league this season, it will be down to no small part of not playing in the Europa league. I would take that any day thanks.

I'm not actually missing us in Europe. Because you could see how battered the team were earlier this year. Hopefully Fulham will be suitably battered, knackered and depleted by Sunday.

The extra rest and preparation time for the Premier games could make the world of difference to our achievements in the League.

I hope it has weakened Fulham because if we don't get an early goal, they showed again last night how they're willing & able to park the whole team in front of their penalty are & bore the living shit out of everybody just like they did a few weeks ago.

I'm glad we're not in it this year. Having to play last night with our current injuries could've been disasterous.

Nah - we´re better off without it this season - we needed a break from all that and now we seem to be reaping the benefits
I for one enjoyed my forays into Europe last year and hopefully it´s just a taster for bigger trips in the future like the Bernabeu, San Siro and the Allianz!!

Change of game watching Lazio, there seemed more people on the pitch than in the stadium. Rochi, the hero again from the bench. How old is he and is he still top class.

I didn't see the match but yeah, Rocchi has been played less this season but he can still be deadly. But after all, so can be Inzaghi for Milan, and he is even older than Rocchi (who is 32 I think, while Inzaghi is 36 or something like that).

The Europa League might be the CL ugly little sister but if thats all we qualify for by the end of the season(I really hope we do much, much better than that) by winning a cup or our league position I will be a bit satsfied.
Every year there seems to be some very good teams in it and for most of our players I think it would be good experience.
I dont see it as having done us much good by not being in it especially this early in the season when I think players need games and later in the season we have a squad and wallet big enough to deal with the demands.

Ordinarily, I would agree Slim but because of the massive changes at City and the fact that we are still very much "work in progress, I also think it is fair to make an assessment of where we are at present. Quite simply, we know we are a better side but we don't know quite how much yet. Maybe you're right about the snap judgement but that is how I see it at present based on the limited evidence.

I think you both have a point.
I shall wait till Xmas myself before I decide on whether Hughes is the one or not but I see nothing wrong with making predictions with the information that is available.
The only thing I would question is the statement of we are a work in progress. The way I see it is that we always will be and if cutting our teeth in the Europa league is part of our evolution then I think we have delayed it somewhat by not being in this year.
As we seem to be a better team this year and managed to get to the quarter finals last year with an inferior team I somewhat feel we have missed a good chance to win a prestigous trophy.
And I'm begining to think that jumping into the CL straight away this year wont do us any favours and we need to be in a European competition that we have some chance of progressing in like the Europa.
But thats if this team is gonna be kept and grow if it is just transitional then I'm a believer in if we buy enough quality maybe we could jump into the CL straight away.
