Michael Johnson continues his comeback in tonight's reserve game against Liverpool - his second appearance at the City of Manchester Stadium on successive nights.

Midfielder Johnson came off the bench minutes from the end of the 3-1 victory over West Ham, his first senior outing since being injured in a Carling Cup tie at Brighton a year ago.

Javier Garrido and Vladi Weiss, both unused substitutes against the Hammers, are also in the starting line-up for Glyn Hodges' unbeaten Barclays Premier Reserve League North leaders.

Prolific striker David Ball links up with Robbie Mak to present a formidable challenge to Liverpool. Ball scored twice as Everton were dismissed 4-1 in the Reserves' last home game.

Entrance W will be open from 6.15pm. Seasoncard holders will be admitted free, as will Live4City members accompanied by an adult. Adults pay £3, concessions £1. The North car park will be free.

City line up: Taylor, Smith, Garrido, Vidal, Wabara, Johnson, Weiss, Ibrahim, Ball, Mak, Poole. Substitutes: Cunningham, Tobias Johansen, Moore, Kay, Redshaw.

The midfielder, subbed at halftime, took it on the chins:

The best team won tonight and for Johnson it was just another step towards fitness. He struggled to get into it at all for a while as he was effectively marked in the middle of the field. When he did break free he played a couple of good passes but at times when he was well forward and the move broke down he had not got a sprint to get back goalside.
Taylor saved a couple of certs to keep us close but our best chances came late on especially from Robbie Mak.

it really is hard to tell that he is the same person. I don't think I've seen such a physical change in a footballer in all my years of watching. Whilst he is overweight, you can see some muscle in their as well, he has the build of a centre back now.

Looking forward to him having a good few months of pain free training and footy so he can get super fit. I don't think we will ever see the Jonno in the first pic again as I think he has more muscle mass now.

Dig up a few photos of Steven Ireland over the years.

Johnson obviously is really some distance away from match fitness. But he was always going to fill out a big between 18 and 21.

If you look at him next to Barry or Bridge he doesn't look like some fat bloke stood next to them, he just looks like any other player. People are being too picky because he looks different to when he was younger. He'll lose a bit of weight & get a bit more toned sure but he's got big fuck off cheekbones on the other picture as well & he's not going to change that drastically, he's a big muscular geezer now rather than the skinny kid he used to be.

Only a slight change in Ireland's physical make-up. He's always been a skinny lad, but now he's one of those muscley skinny wippet types rather than willow the wisp.

See the difference. Not as much as Johnson but we've also been talking about someone considered to be especially well conditioned.

Johnno looks like a right bruiser now. Just what we need in centre mid. I'm more than happy with it.
