Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!
by 10.Goater_Legend » Sun Aug 23, 2009 11:44 pm
The lads over at Bluemoon have started a petition to get a testimonial from the club for the legend that is Weavo, I've decided to put it up on here aswell so that it could hopefully pick up some more signatures.
Nicky Weaver played a huge part in getting us where we are today so lets get it signed boys for a true City legend.
It reads as follows...
To: Manchester City Football Club
Nicky Weaver the Manchester City legend was denied a testimonial by City when he left the club in July 2007. Having signed for City from Mansfield in 1997 he went on to become a cult hero at Maine Road and then The City Of Manchester Stadium before being released. He had his injury problems but I think as his reward for his sheer determination throughout those years to pull on that number one shirt again means he deserves a testimonial at Manchester City and one last chance to wear that number one jersey that he should have made his own.
If you remember one thing about Nicky Weaver remember the penalty saves he made against Gillingham in the Division two play-off final when he was just 19 years old. He played his part in where we are today.
Please sign this petition and as soon as we get 24,000 people on it (half the size of COMS) I will pass it onto the club and hopefully they will realise that the fans want to see Nicky Weaver have his testimonial but I need your help, tell every single Man City fan you know!!
Thank you
CITY TILL I DIE
Sincerely,
The Undersigned

I like Weaver and I'm grateful for all that he did for the club.
But at the same time he left on a Bosman for Charlton after spending years receiving expensive treatment (and wages) when it was unsure whether he'd play again. Yes, there was a delay because of the takeover but I didn't think it was especially loyal of him. I don't agree that he was released (based on my recollection at the time).
I wish him good luck in finding a club but I'm not willing to demand that the club grant him a testimonial.

I agree, I like weaver as much as the next man but the majority of time he spent here was on the treatment table with money out of city's pockets (pre sheiky mind you) whilst he was getting specialist treatment to save his career. Then he leaves on a bossy.
I think even the man himself will be a little embarrased if a testimonial was arranged.

Didn't he leave in a strop cos Sven said he'd have to have a trial to earn his contract?
I'm in the don't bother camp, he chose to leave when he did and the club did right by him whilst he was here and he's still making a very good living.

I loved Weaver at City but bollox to him avin a testimonial coming outta our pockets.
Things are so very different these days to when they started testimonials. The lads a millionaire for fucles sake! Yes, read that again a MILLIONAIRE from the wages he earned at City.
There are far more deserving cases than Weaver. Neil Young being one of the many.
Sorry to piss on the parade but millionaires shouldn't be given testimonials unless they guarantee to give all the money to Christie hospital or summat like that.

Testimonial for Weaver? Must be some sort of a joke surely. He got paid by cIty for years when he was injured and had all his treatment footed by us too no doubt. Good to see he is hooked up with another team but he does not merit a testimonial, nor do City owe him anything. We are not a charity - Dunne meanwhile does merit a testimonial having completed 10 seasons after this one - whether he gets one is another matter.

Absolutely fucking no way.
I have great memories of Nicky Weaver and shall always think of him fondly for his shootout heroics
But face facts. He was a poor pro who liked beer and pies much more than he should. Consequently, for me, he spent probably more time recovering from injuries than he ought to have (a bit like Johnson for all of you who despair of the slack he has been cut).
He also earned a lot of money so far in his career. If he were to do this on the basis that all the money raised went to charity then I might support the idea. Raising money for him though, no bloody chance

no player in this day and age should have a testimonial, they pocket a lot of dosh while at the club, and that should be enough!!
i will never forget what weaver has done for the club, but he picked up a pretty penny while he was doing this!!
Support the badge, players come and go along with managers!!!

Sorry, Loved him as a Cult figure but he was paid very highly to piss away any potential world class talent he had and spent the majority of time on the treatement table or playing on loan at other clubs.
He's still playing and still have about 7/8 years left to continue making alot of money.

Good keeper when fit but never looked after himself properly with regards to his dietry intake and his attitude towards training etc, his injuries could in some small way be put down to this lack of professionalism and City looked after him very very well throughout his long, drawn out injury riddled years after the 99 Wembley match. imo we owe him nothing as a club, he owes us much more. Where would it end if we gave him a testimonial? He wasn't the only player to get us through the dark days. (Plus he was out of position for Carl Asabers goal at Wembley so he needed to redeem himself in the shootout Lol ;-))

Waste of time. City testimonials were often badly attended even in the days when we had a majority of real supporters. The only way the present bunch of instant gratification, burger chewing, non singing, whinging, leave with 15 mins to go characters would turn out is if it coincided with us having won the league or something.

Signed and would be a shame for the club with the new ethics not to do this even if it was before their time. It would show respect and and honour to our history.

Ridiculous request, in no way does he deserve a testimonial. In fact, except in extreme circumstances, NO player should get a testimonial, they are paid way too much anyway.

This isn't even about the money Blue2...it's about recognising his contribution to Manchester City Football club...a contribution that every City fan recognises but you apparently

This aint about money? Then I don't think there will be a single blue who would not wish him a testimonial if the entrance was FREE. Then he gets his recognition (does he really need it?) and we don't have to pay more of our hard earned.

i love weaver because of some key moments in his city career not the entire thing. he got paid well and was never mistreated by the club so any testamonial for him really should only be about appreciation for what he has done, not to raise him money. but if we open that door to weaver i can think of plenty of others who then suddenly become eligible for a testimonial.
testimonials are best kept for players who play every game for 7-8 years. if we start giving them out based on magic moments the list will become endless.

yeh i did. i said testimonials are best kept for players who have played
EVERY game for 7-8 years. Weaver sadly didn't consistantly feature enough to warrant a testimonial on game merit imo.
