If an attacker plays the ball forward and it skims the defender, then that's given as offside, I see this as more similar to that scenario than a deliberate back pass.

Intention has nothing to do with it. And it didn't skim off his head, the ball completely changed direction. Just like if a defender meant to clear the ball, but sliced it sideways to the striker. All pretty straight forward

There's a team in this group of players, just a headless chicken for a manager. Get a manager with a bit of balls and half an understanding of tactics and England would be odds on to reach the semifinals
