Vertonghen is a very good player.

He is going to be better cover than using Garcia. He has loads of champions league experience. We could have done alot worse and not signed anybody.

Just listened to his interview and comes across a knowledgeable and genuine guy. I'm sure Pellers wouldn't bring in a duffer, after all his knob is on the block if it all goes pear shaped. Look fwd to seing the guy in action.

Come on the Blues - nothing and no one in the PL to be scared of

He didn't look very good when Giroud scored yesterday. Bang average defender.

It is very hard to sign a quality player that knows he is going to be fourth choice so the fact that we have signed someone whose better days are behind them is not a surprise. He has tons of experience and is apparently a leader so all in all I have no complaints about him.

What annoys me is that we had a good 4th choice in Toure but he had to come off the wage bill which is understandable but why pay three million for his replacement. Surely it would have made financial sense just to keep Toure in that case.

How we got through with Lescott at right CB is beyond me. Thank God we've got someone. Someone half-decent who can play the ball and has lots of experience with Bayern and Malaga.

He signed the forms with his left hand, is he one of those left handed right footed freaks?

You need to be fast for a defender imo...cole gets chelsea out of the shite more often than not. This Demi guy is slow as fuck and when he doesnt read the game well hes fucked once someone has a yard on him.

Im not happy with this signing at all...makes zero sense to me.

It's not just that Lescott can't play the ball he also can't defend against teams who try to play football. Hull tried to pass the ball around on Saturday and he looked utterly lost. Look at his 'tackle' for the sitter they missed at 0-0.

A decent squad player who can come on when it is backs against the wall and play against teams who try and put the ball in the box like Stoke but anything other than that I have zero confidence in him.

on the plus side, lescott looked dangerous as an attacking threat at set pieces

I don't get the outrage. We have not signed him to play 40 games a season. Who else could we have signed this late?

John Terry was never quick. Rio Ferdinand's legs have gone but they are still top defenders.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE FAST TO BE A DEFENDER.
It's 10000x more important to be able to read the game and anticipate. Someone with those qualities will get to the ball before someone who is just fast 95% of the time. Sure pace helps but it is not high up on the list of what you need to be a central defender.

Point taken , Im just all at sea and lost for ideas when I look at what we have right now at the back, from the last 3 seasons the defence has been pretty much solid and now we are about as solid as mushy peas..........

We don't need a fast defender when defending with a high line?

Terry was awful under AVB who tried the high-line in late 2011. They conceded loads, including 5 at home against Arsenal.

And 88.6% of statistics have a decimal point added to make them seem more realistic.
