Mate, my family came over here in the 1950s from Ireland (aunts, uncles, grandparents, the lot). And the whole family became City fans immediately because of Bert. Not just because of how good he was, nor because he was a 'star', but because of the life he had led, the traumas he had overcome and the dignity he always showed. He's the reason I'm a blue and my little daughter's a blue. A true City legend, indeed. And god bless him and his family.

@DidsburyDave
City absolutely have to name the new redeveloped South Stand "The Bert Trautmann Stand". Fitting as it's behind the goal of course.

The German Football Association (DFB) mourns the death of Bernd "Bert" Trautmann. The former goalkeeper, who remained a prisoner of war in England with Manchester City 1956 FA Cup won and was elected in the same year, the English footballer of the year, died Friday morning at the age of 89 years in his Spanish adopted home of La Llosa near Valencia.

"Bert Trautmann was a great athlete and a true gentleman. He came as a soldier and thus as anti-war to England and was on the island a celebrated hero. He was already a living legend. His extraordinary career will forever remain in the history books" said DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach.

Bert Trautmann had suffered two heart attacks this year, but they survived. In this respect, his death came as a complete surprise on Friday morning. His wife Marlies conveyed the sad news directly to the DFB.

"Since 1996, when he was a member of our official delegation at winning the European Championship in England, we had very close contact., The DFB had invited him to the Bundestag in October to Nuremberg, but he canceled because he at the same time his 90th birthday wanted to celebrate, "said Niersbach:" all the more surprising hits us all the news. "

Rest in peace Bert. Very sad news. Condolences to his family.

The man was indeed a legend, what a life story, he's the type of bloke who leaves this world a better place by his having graced it with his dignified presence. He leaves an inspirational imprint on humanity.

He was a great credit to our club and one of the reasons I call myself a blue with pride.

I just watched the Bert Trautmann story over lunch.

Hollywood stuff. Very few footballer/people will ever have a story like him.

He will be greatly missed.
