I'll take any excuse to watch football during the off-season. Thankfully there's a summer with the World Cup, then the Euro Cup, then the Copa America, and this. It makes the lack of league football more tolerable.

I'm with Gillie. It's a meaningless tournament. There's plenty of football around the world going on that's more interesting than this tournament. AND it's possible to get too much of something. I find the lack of football during the summer as something positive because it makes me look forward to the start of the season even more.

Italia, Mexico, Brasil, Spain....

come the fucl on...how can you not get excited about that?

you guys are a bunch of dicks.

cheers

Because no one fucking cares. It's just so blatant money spinning exercise. And players should get rest anyway. I watched some of it yesterday and decided I'm not going to follow the tournament at all. And most long term posters know that I watch any old crap that passes as football.

You can't even think of it as scouting exercise because over the years most of the players who have shone on this tournament has turned out to be pretty crap.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

Well done ^Jo^

I hope you're being funny, 10 in 29 is not scoring left, right and center.

Admittedly, more than it was for us.

Off course it's left, right and center for Jo. :-)

I think it's strange and altogether fitting we aren't spelling "centre" correctly, as nothing about this conversation seems right.

And Brazil are ranked 20-what in the world? It's the name people get excited about, they are a pretty poor team, a shadow of past Brazilian teams.

Here's Jo's usual aftermatch photoshoot, apologies to those this always upsets (not really!):

Do you take those rankings seriously? They are 22nd because they haven't played too many matches recently.

Nor could England beat Montenegro or Sweden or Ireland, all ranked way below England. As I said, these rankings rarely make sense.

I don't see Brazil as being much better than their ranking suggests, although I don't think the side they put out is their strongest. England will quickly slide down unless there is a sudden improvement.

I agree that they're a shadow of themselves nowadays, but think their FIFA ranking is way off the mark. Are you seriously suggesting that you think they deserve to be 1 place above Mali (third highest-ranked in Africa), or 2 below Denmark (whipped at home 4-0 by Armenia last week)?

They've lost 6 games since the last World Cup, by my reckoning - 3 of which were against Argentina, the others being once each against Germany, England and Paraguay (in a penalty shootout).

Brazil hadn't played competitively before yesterday for some crazy length of time (I was only half listening to the commentator, it might have been two years) - that quite clearly will have affected their ranking for very obvious reasons.

Why nobody bid for Montolivo hes great player.
You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer.

Spain vs. Uruguay in approx 2.5 hours.

Italy up 1-0 over Mexico after a Pirlo set piece but Hernandez tied it with a penalty.
