Fucking bargain, success despite the fact it could have been so much better.
Wouldn't disagree with this
That's the same as saying United letting Rooney go for £10m would be a good deal because then he's only cost them 1.7 a season. Completely missing the point of the market value of a player like dzeko, a proven goalscorer in more than one league, goals critical to champions in 2 countries, rarely injured, etc etc.
It's also questionable how much of the £14m we will see given he had 4 years left on his contract.
But then factor in that he was a player the club were clearly happy to let go and the player himself didn't appear to be too disappointed. He is 29 and his value isn't going to rise over the next year or so and there didn't appear to be a queue trying to sign him. Scored six last year and was starting to get niggling injuries. Couple of young prospects who in a year of so would've overtaken him in pecking order. Add these together and for me it's good business
I agree to an extent with all your points, but the big question is why the fuck we gave him a 5 year deal in the middle of the season just gone if we wanted rid. Even with jusy a year left on his contract we would have still got £14m, so are Pellegrini & co just making this squad up as they go along, or is there a strategy?
I fear that the pattern we have seen for some time is of ill considered knee jerk reactions in our transfer strategies, and I see little changing on the summer's evidence.
The giving of the contract last year is a strange one. Maybe the logic is we thought we would get more for him if we were to sell him. He had after all just scored over 20 goals the preceding season and I doubt many foresaw the poor season he was to have last time round. That hasn't helped his cause. I doubt we would have got £14m with a year left at 29 personally.
Maybe he fell out with either the management or had a clash with other players. Aguero rarely passed to him. Speculation. Maybe the signing of Bony put his nose out of joint. Who knows. However, once the club decides the time is right to move a player on, then if we take a loss due there being few takers, then so be it.
I too am a little perplexed by our transfer strategy. Again, we never know what goes on behind the scenes. Is co was going to sign then didn't. Same with Hazard. And Kaka a few years back. Who is to say we hadn't agreed everything to sign our targets, whomever they are/were, and then there to be an unforeseen hitch at the last minute to bugger things up? One thing I do think is that we are planning our signings around the academy. Maybe the reason we haven't added to the defence is that management firmly believe Denayer, Maffeo and Angelino will be good enough very soon and so we strengthen other areas?
