CL form versus League form

Whether we focus more on the CL or the PL is surely down the top brass at the club. As fans we want to see the same application applied to all games, but in reality some games are deemed more important than others. It would appear Pellegrini has been briefed that the CL is more important and as such his team selections have shown that. One can only speculate on what he then briefs his players to do during the game in terms of tactics. My guess the focus is not on a high pressing game so as to try and conserve energy for the upcoming games. This then translates into the lethargic, limp and pedestrian performances that we are now all to accustomed too.

Pep will change this strategy.

I completely agree with this. I was in the minority who would have actually preferred the FA cup over the CL. However, the club appear to view CL success as a priority and it would seem from the performances and results in the PL that Pellegrini has had orders to prioritise.

There is no way on planet earth the owners would sacrifce our top3 position for an advancement in the CL...no fuckign way.
Its bad enough 4th spot as we would still need to qualify ffs ! winning the premiership is EVERYTHING.

Effort and focus on CL is why I put my money down on City in the CL months back.
I think it has been obvious for months that CL was the focus - the late goals, away performances, etc...

For this team to have a chance in any competition you need effort, focus and
have a fit (and playing well) Joe, Vinny, YaYa, Silva, Kun and Brown supplemented by Sterling and Nasri.

We have have not got a prayer again'st PSG with Joe, Vinny, Sterling injured, Brown and Nasri not fully fit and Silva out of sorts.

In fairness if you took the equivalent 'spine' out of any team - they would not win much either.
With us this season when the 'spine' were playing - we were useless in the PL - due to lack of effort.
In every job in every walk of life - if people know mgmt changes are coming - productivity drops. That is a fact, human nature - football is no exception.

True but Bayern are an exception (as is a German mentality).
They are way ahead of everybody else in that league, this will be their forth title in a row.

I was thinking more of what happens when players know or suspect a manager is leaving - performances keep getting worse.
Then a new guy is appointed and immediately results pick up (sometimes only short term) but that pick-up has to be down to effort and focus.
I mean what can the new guy have changed so quickly - very little. Then when they get used to him the results taper off.
The most obvious example being in 2001 when SAF said he was leaving at the end of the season.

Michael, I've been one who had been waiting for us to be found out as the level gets more intense.
I'm starting to get a bit of a buzz back watching us. I'm wondering can the likes of a performance like last night's raise the team's spirit enough to really finish on a high.
I thought we were lucky in Paris, but last night was a huge improvement. If we can build on that, get all our players back to fitness, pick the right team with the right mentality, who knows. At the very least it could lift our effort in the PL also. Hope so.
CL final and third in PL would do me.
Still think what's left in the CL is better than anyone we've played, but we're showing signs of improvement as we go.
Maybe we'll peak in May.
