Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!
by john@staustell » Mon Dec 28, 2009 12:20 pm
Whether it's a reaction to:
1) City winning
2) Monstrous amounts of abuse from us to the press
3) Voices of reason being drowned out last week
but all of a sudden this morning and yesterday I find a load of reasonable reports, saying it was no real surprise that Hughes was sacked, saying that Mancini did great things in Italy etc, has a very strong character etc. Saying that they couldn't understand some of the press reaction last week. Staring with Ollie Holt with Craig Bellamy, and Horrible Henry Winter in the Tele.
I suspect they realise they went a bit OTT and, obviously disappointed we won, have returned to more moderate ramblings. Robinho is still a, somewhat legitimate, target though and needs to do some talking with his feet.
But of course with their other main targets Liverpool and Arsenal winning, it is pretty essential for us to win tonight, to keep the press dogs in their place!

Sorry John mate but I think you're giving the media far too much credit for having a sense of balance.
Your title says it all for me...

More like they are just starting to big up Bobby ManC so they can knock him and the club back down again.
We certainly seem to be the Panto this season

Not saying they've developed balance. Just probably feel a bit embarrassed!!
Best win the PL and shut them all up.

Was mentioned on SSN earlier that Bellers is sueing over false claims he handed in a transfer request.
Probably softened them up abit until next time.

You have to know how to read them in context vhero as the quality varies even within different papers - look for direct quotes and proper research and you usually have an article with some merit.

That probably sounds a bit too much like hard work to the average hack.

It was mentioned that the club were looking at avenues to stop the diatribe. I wonder if they have had a quiet word with certain parties?

It really wouldn't supprise me to learn that the club have given back training access to those that write 'nice' things about us

Oliver Holt is a City supporter, at least that's what he said in a Daily Mirror article I kept from the 4-1 promotion win at Blackburn. Henry Winter isn't a fan, but he's an intelligent guy who loves football and knows what he's talking about.

Henry Winter, I believe, is an Arsenal fan. I'm still to be convinced that he knows what he's talking about alot of the time.

It's not the sacking of Hughes that caused the problem imo, it's the stories they fed the press beforehand & the way it was handled. If we win a few games & play good football, it should hopefully blow over & they can all get stuck into Benitez.

Last season, Martin Samuel suddenly went nice on us and, low and behold, he had a long exclusive interview with hughes a few weeks later. He's been reasonable ever since. I suspect the prospect of a few good interviews and Bellamy's intentions to sue those who quoted a 'source' should bring them back in line.
Loathe him or loathe him, it's one thing taggart has had sorted for ages. Say a bad word and you're banned from interviews, press conferences, everything. Your career as a football correspondent has therefore been severely dented hence they stay in line. The papers need us more than we need them and a few need to be helped to remember that.
